Afrojazz Quintet is a Helsinki-based group that performs their own, unique mixture of afrobeat, afrofunk, blues, soul and reggae. Steaming hot solos, dance-friendly rhythms and heart-touching melodies, seasoned and cooked with African spices - this is music from and for the soul and heart.

Afrojazz Quintet has been the houseband for Afrojazz Club, arranged regularly in Helsinki and Tampere. The band has worked together with artists like Jimi Tenor, Ismaila Sané, Sam Huber, Sakari Kukko, Richard Stanley and Emilia Sisco. They released their debut album “Bongo jazz” together with singer Charlotta Kerbs in 2019, and are currently working on new material for their upcoming album. A new single will be released during 2021.

Singer, composer and producer Yoni Teran (Yoanky T

Singer, composer and producer Yoni Teran (Yoanky Terán Bacallao) was born in Havana, Cuba to a family full of singers and musicians. He composed his first song being just 14-years old and started singing at early age. Yoni Teran worked with different groups singing Latin music, before heading to his career of a solo artist.

His sweet tenor voice with a romantic twist took him to the career of music. At this moment, the production of Yoni Teran is reggeaton/latin pop and has reflections of different rhythms from Hip Hop and R&B.

In years 2005-2008, he released songs like: Es un escandalo”, ”Muero”, “Fiesta ahora”, “Sera mejor asi” “Pa que llorar” and “Me estoy enamorando”, all with Music Hit Factory and Clippers SL.

From 2012 until 2018 he released several songs as an independent artist: ”Besame la boca”, “Amor Pa ti”, “Ay Amor” video: https://bit.ly/3cIy7tv , “Amor es como tú” and “Sea lo que sea”. Before releasing his latest album, he made a more romantic song “No soy nada”. The last album is called ”Sea lo que sea” and was released in 2019.

Ahmed Kakoyi (Uganda, 1980) known by his stage nam

Ahmed Kakoyi (Uganda, 1980) known by his stage name 'Mad Ice' is a dynamic, well versed, self-taught singer-songwriter who crosses all genres with his music. An acclaimed musician in the African continent, he rose to fame with his debut studio album and title single 'Baby gal' which topped the charts throughout 2003-2004 on radio stations in East Africa. In 2005, his new single 'Wange' also debuted at number one in the region. In the same year, Mad Ice signed a record deal with a Finnish label in Helsinki where he is now based.

A great performer, Mad Ice performs at international venues and stages around the world. Singing in English, Swahili and Luganda, Mad Ice’s soulful voice always captures the attention of audiences whether he is on a Pop, Jazz or World stage.

"Rumba Columbia on maskuliininen, virtuoosimainen tanssi, jota toki naisetkin tanssivat nykyään. Kuubalainen rumba koostuu kolmesta “lajista”: yambú, guaguancó ja columbia. Kuubassa se on kadunmiesten ja -naisten tanssi ja sen perustana on jatkuva, viettelevä peli. Rumban tanssiminen vapauttaa tanssijan liikekieltä. Se auttaa kehittämään torson, muun kehon ja jalkojen erillistä liikettä, rytmitajua, sekä liikkeiden eleganssia ja kauneutta.

Rumba Columbia is a masculine and virtuoso dance, also danced by many women nowadays. Rumba has 3 modalities, yambú, guaguancó and columbia. It’s a common people’s dance in Cuba, and is based on a constant play of seduction. Rumba builds the freedom of movement in the student, the independent movement of torso, body and the legs, confidence in the rhythm, and the beauty and elegance of the dance."

Afrojazz Club ja Puistokarkelot kohtaavat ystävänpäivän spesiaalitapahtumassa Suvilahden Tiivistämössä. Päälavan valtaavat vuorotellen suomalaisen kansanmusiikin ja afrikkalaisperäisen musiikin moninaiset taiturit. Päälavan esitysten välillä tunnelmoidaan pienempien kokoonpanojen ja työpajojen parissa lämpiössä. Osallistuminen tapahtuu turvallisesti striimin välityksellä! Varaa siis kesäiset piknik-herkut valmiiksi, perhe ja ystävät langan päähän ja heittäydy mukaan uudenlaiseen elämykseen, jossa eri kulttuurien rytmit kohtaavat

Afrojazz Club and Puistokarkelot come together with a special online event on Valentine’s Day! You will experience top performers presenting folk, afro and latin vibes on the main stage of Tiivistämö in Suvilahti. Smaller groups and other programme provide a joyful feeling from the side stage in between the main stage’s performances. Everything will be available safely online, so be prepared with summery picnic treats and family and friends online - just sit back, relax and throw yourself into a new experience where rhythms from different cultures meet up!

"As a social work student, my interest has always

"As a social work student, my interest has always been to broaden my knowledge on the relevance of Afro and Caribbean music in promoting cultural awareness especially in community outreach festivals in Finland. Last summer, I went to one of the events organized by Kulttuurikameleontit, Afrojazz Club goes Alppipuisto, with my friend who happens to be a frequent goer. I was really pleased with the overall atmosphere of the event along with the high level of professionalism displayed.

For this reason, I requested for an internship opportunity at Kulttuurikameleontit which subsequently turned out to be one of the best decisions that i have ever made as far as academic internship is concerned.

Before the coronavirus pandemic, Kulttuurikameleontit had a host of summer events in its calendar. Unfortunately, the events were postponed due to the pandemic as expected. But this new reality has exposed me to new work cultures and allows me to gain project-based work experience as all the tasks have shifted from in-person to virtual.
